The next step is to copy the image, and then promote or convert it into a transparent layer. Since we are dealing with a black and white image, we are more than likely dealing with shades of grey. If your background color is white, or a single solid color, you can save the image as a png file extension. The choice of png is because it not only supports true color resolution, but it also supports transparency and layers. Many graphic images whether on or off the computer are developed through the use of layers or cells. If you immediately begin by relying upon layers, you can develop a sense or "feel" of how layers can be built to create depth and density. If you have successfully saved the image as a png layer with a transparent background, you might need to place it over a colored background to verify that it is indeed transparent.
